Top 10 Questions & Answers about Volunteering this year

Do I have to register if I want to volunteer, go on a field trip, and participate in my child’s class this year?

A. Yes, registration is required for all Wake County Public Schools, completing one form automatically register you for schools in the system.

How can I register? How long does it take?

A. The best way is to come to the school’s Media Center and go to volunteer.wcpss.net and register. It takes 5 to 10 minutes.

Currently, you need to register each year. But since this is so new, the guidelines may change at the end of the year. A criminal background check is usually good for 2 years.

Once you register, the turn around time is currently a week, at which time you should be informed of your status

You need to know your driver’s license number, social security number, and your addresses for the last 7 years.

What kind of report does the school principal get?

A. Ms. Venezia and Ms. Gaskins will receive a confidential list weekly of who is approved and who is not. Wake County Security will know. Teachers will get a list of those who have registered and are approved.

If I am not approved, will the school personnel know why?

A. No, only WCPSS security will know.

If I am not approved, can I still go on a field trip with my child?

A. Yes, but keep in mind you can only accompany your child and honestly that will present an awkward situation.

If I am registered or approved can I begin volunteering right away?

A. Yes

What should I do if I have additional questions?

A. Contact Ms. Gaskins or Ms. Venezia – they have registered and are familiar with the system.

Will background checks be done on all volunteers?

A. No, only those who may spend time with children out of the direct sight of school personnel i.e. tutoring in the Media Center, or on a field trip to the zoo. See the flier from WCPSS regarding levels of volunteer activity.

Can I get a paper application?

A. Yes, but remember someone will have to type your information into the computer. (We prefer you do that yourself.)

If I want to volunteer now but go on a field trip later, can I update my status from Level 1 or 2 to Level 3?

A. Yes, you can.
